When the Tenth Month Comes

When the Tenth Month Comes is a multimedia project that explores notions of history and memory through an emphasis on sites with a particularly charged past. And through these sites exploring the human condition in situations of collective bereavement.

By experiencing first-hand and documenting certain historic sites while in Hồ Chí Minh City, my intention was to gain an understanding of how we interpret, navigate and relate to these locations. While, obtaining insight on their embedded histories. For me, these sites represent strongholds of our shared common memory and are permeated with latent history, thus inviting us to experience, read and decode them.

Also, the project references director Đặng Nhật Minh's eighties film by the same title (Bao Giờ Cho Đến Tháng Mười). By making use of texts and images derived from the film and recreating through installation the film’s overall mood. It was of value for me to bring the film forward, not only for its significance as the sole Vietnamese film made about the War. As well as for the film’s principal actor, Lê Vân, who in her writings of an autobiography is credited with having described notions of contemporary womanhood in  Vietnamese society.

This body of work was conceptualised, researched and outlined during my stay as artist-in-residence at A. Farm Residency in Hồ Chí Minh City, Vietnam in 2019.

A.Farm is a collaborative residency programme presided over by Nguyen Art Foundation, MoT+++ and Sàn Art.

The project was exhibited as part of Galleries' Night Bangkok 2020 at Buró57.
