c/n/r/y

The piece C/N/R/Y is an exploration that invites us to imagine what a deep coal mine would sound like. In my view, a mine is an artificial fissure on the planet’s surface with the sole purpose of extraction.

There are sounds inherent to this activity; however, what I explore in this piece are the ones made by the earth itself. I imagine these to be reverbative murmurs, with deep bass echoes that are indistinguishable to us, yet quite present. In that resonant, intense rebounding sound, an agony manifests, and it is from imagining this sentient, lamenting sound that I constructed this piece.

What's more, C/N/R/Y also explores the metaphor of the “canary in the coal mine.” This alludes to the extremes and limits we are beginning to face as a human species. These are especially evident regarding the negative impact on our living environment.
